For Australian Tradies & Local Service Businesses

SEO Canberra: Show Up in the Districts You Actually Work In

Canberra searches follow its town centres. A business that shows strongly in Belconnen can be close to invisible in Tuggeranong. We build local search around where your customers really are.

Straight through to the person who'd actually do the work — no call centre.

Canberra is a planned city, and local search follows the plan. It's built as a set of town centres (Belconnen, Gungahlin, Woden, Tuggeranong, the inner north and south, Weston Creek and the Molonglo Valley), and Google reads it much the same way. For a trade or service business, that shapes who sees you when someone searches.

Why Canberra Local Search Works by District

When someone searches for a service near them, Google shows three businesses with a map before the ordinary results. Those three get most of the clicks on local service searches, and they're ranked mainly on:

  • Proximity: how close your registered location is to the person searching
  • Reviews: how many, how recent, and whether you reply
  • Profile completeness: categories, service areas, photos, hours and regular updates

Proximity is the part that catches Canberra businesses out. Your map listing tends to rank well around your own base and fade across the city, so a business in Gungahlin can lead its own district and barely appear in Tuggeranong.

The fix isn't pretending to be everywhere. It's two things together: a Google Business Profile set up to win your own district properly, and website pages built for the ordinary search results, which aren't distance-limited, to reach the districts your pin can't.

The Queanbeyan Question

Queanbeyan sits across the border in New South Wales, along with nearby areas such as Googong. Plenty of Canberra businesses work both sides, but Google treats them as separate places.

If Queanbeyan is part of your patch, it has to be stated plainly: in your Business Profile service areas, on your website, and in the jobs you describe. Businesses that leave it implied usually show on one side of the border and not the other.

What We Do

  • Google Business Profile: the right primary category, real service areas, photos from actual jobs and regular posts. The profile is the fastest-moving lever in local search, so it comes first.
  • Reviews: a request built into the end of every job, and a reply to every review. Recent reviews and quick replies count for more than a large pile of old ones. More in our guide on getting more Google reviews.
  • Service and district pages: one strong page per service you want to be found for, plus pages for the districts where you genuinely do the work. No suburb spam.
  • Technical basics: speed, mobile layout, indexing and schema, so Google can read the site properly. If the site itself is the problem, we rebuild it.
  • Citations: consistent business details across the directories Google cross-checks.

Measured in Calls, Not Rankings

A ranking report is easy to produce and says nothing about whether the phone rang. We report calls, enquiries and rankings by district, mapped on a grid across Canberra so you can see exactly where you show up and where you don't, month over month.

Working With Us From Queensland

We're based in the Noosa hinterland and work with Canberra businesses remotely: calls, screen shares and a shared view of your reports. Local SEO lives in your profile, your site and your reviews, so where the agency sits doesn't change the work. We'd rather tell you that plainly than invent a Canberra address.

SEO or Ads First?

They do different jobs. Google Ads buy the top of the page today and stop when you stop paying. SEO takes months and keeps producing after. If you need work this month, run ads while the search work builds underneath.

Start With the Numbers

Our SEO traffic value calculator shows what ranking for your main searches would be worth in paid clicks. That's a useful ceiling for what SEO should cost you.

Or book a 20-minute call. We'll look at where you currently show up across Canberra, what's holding you back and what's realistic, and tell you straight if SEO isn't the right move yet.

No lock-in contracts

Frequently asked questions

Do you have an office in Canberra?+

No. We're based in the Noosa hinterland in Queensland and work with Canberra businesses remotely. Local SEO happens in your Google Business Profile, your website and your reviews, and none of that needs us in the room. What it needs is someone who knows how Canberra's districts show up in search.

How long does SEO take to work in Canberra?+

Realistically three to six months before it produces steady work. The first movement usually shows in the map results, because Google Business Profile changes land faster than website rankings. Anyone promising page one in 30 days is either selling ads under another name or targeting searches nobody makes.

Can I rank across all of Canberra?+

In the map results, only partly. Google shows people the businesses near them, so your registered location sets how far your map listing reaches, and most businesses show strongly in their own district and weaker in the rest. The ordinary results below the map aren't limited by distance in the same way, so well-built pages can reach the districts your pin can't.

Do I need a separate page for every Canberra suburb?+

No, and thin copies hurt more than they help. A page is worth building for a district where you genuinely do a lot of work and have something specific to say about it. Ten near-identical suburb pages with the name swapped is the pattern Google filters out.

I work in Queanbeyan too. Does that change anything?+

Yes. Queanbeyan is across the border in New South Wales, and Google treats it as its own place. If you serve both, your Business Profile service areas and your website need to say so explicitly. Otherwise you tend to show up on one side of the border and not the other.

How much does SEO cost?+

Our fees are flat and monthly, published on our homepage, and month to month with no lock-in contract. What you're paying for is ongoing work: profile upkeep, reviews, content and citations. A one-off setup gives a short lift and then stalls.
